Two training courses on wastewater treatment and reuse have been held in Lebanon and Jordan, within the framework of the Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/MEP project, by the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA).

The three-day courses, held in Jordan from 6 to 8 March and in Lebanon from 9 to 11 March 2011, are part of a Mediterranean-wide capacity building effort. The courses, which involved extensive hands-on training, aimed to introduce wastewater reuse through integrated water resources management while strengthening knowledge on technologies and technology selection.

Attended by 50 participants in total, the courses targeted experienced wastewater managers and decision-makers mainly sourced from central government and local authorities, water and sewage associations and relevant research institutions.

According to Yasser Mohammad Al Hanaqta, an Aqaba Wastewater Manager, who participated in the training course in Amman, “The training session is truly beneficial as it offers ample information on new technologies in the field of wastewater and its reuse. Added value is also provided through the tools suggested for decision makers, as well as through the advanced level of the participants, providing a constant platform for information exchange. Overall, the workshop is an excellent opportunity for the participants to develop their management skills in the field.”

Future training workshops are scheduled to take place in Morocco and Algeria as well as other Mediterranean countries.

The Horizon 2020 initiative aims to improve the quality of life of more than 420 million citizens living in the 25 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is an umbrella programme drawing together all the policies, strategies and action plans for enhancing environmental protection. Horizon 2020 has mechanisms in capacity-building, research, monitoring and review that place the initiative in an excellent position to address the challenges it faces and ensure the efficient and effective use of the available resources. The inclusion of the Horizon 2020 Initiative as one of the six components of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) adds to the political impetus to address major environmental challenges.
