BEIRUT: Local officials and environmental groups have thanked the authorities for closing an illegal quarry in the village of Mazraat Sayyad in Jbeil.

The Green Party, the Environment and Development Association and the town’s municipality said the move would halt the damage to the area’s environment and tourism potential.

The groups issued a statement thanking Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, Environment Minister Nazem Khoury and the qaimaqam of Jbeil, Najwa Sweidan Farah for the move.

The Green Party said Lebanese were continuing in their struggle for environmental protection, and stressed the need to “keep politics out of the environment.”
