BEIRUT: Caretaker Agriculture Minister Hussein Hajj Hasan announced Sunday a comprehensive plan to introduce a new kind of citrus tree in a bid to improve productivity.

During a gathering with farmers in Tyre, Hajj Hasan acknowledged that “citrus production suffers from immense negligence in addition to numerous other problems.”

He added: “In the long run, we have a plan to replace the current saplings and introduce a new species of citrus, and with this aim nearly 100,000 saplings will be distributed to farmers for free.”

Hasan also discussed problems related to marketplace competence with farmers.

“There are some problems that we have solved and others that we have not because of the difficult situation in the country [and] the resignation of the Cabinet.”

Despite the troubles in the sector, the caretaker minister said, “We will not bend to the wind.”
