AMMAN — The Water Authority of Jordan and the Yarmouk Water Company on Monday inaugurated the “Mafraq Wastewater Treatment Plant” in a ceremony held at the plant site in Mafraq.

The $34 million project was co-financed by USAID ($26.3 million) and the government ($7.7 million).

In addition to the treatment plant, the project includes a 5km main sewer pipeline to replace a deteriorated pipeline and a water reuse plan to irrigate the areas around the wastewater treatment plant.

The plant has been designed to receive an average wastewater flow of 6,550 cubic metres per day to serve the city of Mafraq until the year 2025, a USAID statement said.

“The Mafraq plant will provide treated wastewater for reuse in a safe, sustainable manner to irrigate surrounding farms, increasing irrigated land and generating income for local communities,” the statement quoted US Ambassador to Jordan Alice G. Wells as saying at the ceremony, attended by Water Minister Hazem Nasser.

“The United States is honoured to be part of these achievements and this valued partnership with the government.”

The project fulfils the objectives of the Jordan National Water Master Plan, which promotes efficient water use in order to adapt to an increasing population, decreasing rainfall and changing social needs, according to the statement.

“The United States is honoured to be part of these achievements and this valued partnership with the government of Jordan,” Wells added.
