AMMAN — Interior Minister Salameh Hammad on Tuesday chaired a meeting at the ministry to discuss the challenges facing the implementation of a renewable energy in Maan, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The project is being executed as a Royal initiative to develop the area and create jobs for residents, according to Petra.

The minister gave his directives to the Maan’s governor to appoint an Interior Ministry official as a liaison officer to handle the security matters that concern the project through direct coordination with contractor.

Speaking at the meeting, Royal Court Secretary General Yousef Issawi noted that implementing the Royal initiatives requires coordination and cooperation among the concerned authorities to deal with any challenges that may surface.

Petra Solar General Manager Yaarub Qudah outlined the obstacles and security and technical challenges that face the project, which entails installing solar panels to serve 2,200 houses and connecting them to the national power grid.

One of the main issues, he said, is collecting the unpaid dues of subscribers.

So far, 480 electricity meters have been installed at the houses covered by the project, which aims at generating electricity for household use.

The company agreed with the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) to cooperate to overcome all of the technical barriers that face the project, including the unpaid dues, Petra reported.

Energy Ministry Secretary General Amani Azzam, EMRC President Farouq Hiari, National Electric Power Company Chairman Abdul Fattah Daradkah and Electricity Distribution Company Chairman Hassan Thneibat also attended the meeting.
