The gas company executives had requested the meeting a week ago, immediately after the Sheshinski Committee evaluating the government’s fiscal policy on natural resources recommended doubling the government’s take from gas profits.

Friday’s meeting addressed the implications of the Sheshinski recommendations regarding the Tamar gas field in the Mediterranean.

Steinitz agreed to hold the meeting even though there will be an official hearing process for the gas companies, scheduled for next month.

The gas executives are thought to have said that the Sheshinski recommendations would delay drilling at Tamar. However, they are not thought to have presented any documents showing that financing for gas extraction or exploration would be damaged.
