AMMAN — The water distribution programme in the northern governorates will be disrupted following power cuts in several main water resources in the north, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation said on Thursday.

A number of water resources affiliated with the Yarmouk Water Company in Irbid Governorate stopped pumping water when power went out on Thursday at 2:00pm, the ministry’s spokesperson, Omar Salameh, said.

“The main water resources supplying the northern governorates were shut down and this will affect water distribution in Irbid, Ramtha, Bani Obeid and Bani Kenanah, as well as Ajloun, Jerash and Mafraq,” Salameh told The Jordan Times.

“Teams from the Water Authority of Jordan will work hard to alleviate the impact of disruptions in water supply on people, especially with the start of the holy month of Ramadan,” the government official highlighted.

Salameh noted that on Thursday evening, power was still out at the water resources.

“Once electricity comes back, we will double all efforts to resume pumping water, in order to provide people with water according to the schedule, even if pumping is for only two hours,” he stressed.

The water authority, which owns the Yarmouk Water Company, called on the public to “understand that disruption of the distribution programme is a matter out of its control”.

The company, which started operations in 2010, provides water and wastewater services to 250,000 subscribers in four northern governorates — Mafraq, Jerash, Ajloun and Irbid — which are home to the lowest water per capita and highest water loss rates in the Kingdom.
