In an attempt to deal with the crumbling cliffs along the Mediterranean shore, the cabinet is expected to approve a proposal by Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan on Sunday to establish a government company to deal with the problem.

The new company will plan and construct various measures to save sections of the cliffs in danger of collapse, including such solutions as building breakwaters.

The NIS 500 million proposal implements a previous cabinet decision that set out the poilcy for protecting the endangered cliffs. The bluffs needing protection stretch more than 10 kilometers and are mostly in the area of Netanya, Herzliya and Ashkelon.

The collapse of the wind-formed cliffs is a natural process, but has been exacerbated by human interference. For example, the construction of marinas and breakwaters along the coast has stopped the natural flow of sand from the sea and has led to the thinning out of the beaches that protect the cliffs. ‏
