AMMAN — The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation recently signed a grant agreement valued at 750,000 euros with the German Development Bank (KfW) to finance the Solid Waste Management Programme’s consultative services and feasibility studies.

The project will be implemented in cooperation with the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), according to a statement issued by the ministry on Thursday. Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury signed the agreement.

The project aims to improve GAM’s management and treatment of solid waste and offer support for the municipality in the areas of solid waste management.

An agreement had been reached with the German government during talks between the Jordanian and German governments held in Bonn last September to provide a 25 million euro soft loan to finance the Solid Waste Management Programme.

The 2015 governmental Jordanian-German talks will be held before year end, the statement said.

The project is part of the government’s efforts to adopt a 2015-2035 national strategy to deal with solid waste which had been formulated in coordination with the ministries of environment and municipal affairs with support from the World Bank and the French Development Agency.

Within the government’s strategy to enhance green economy potential, protect the environment and enhance sustainable development, an 18 million euro soft loan agreement was signed in May with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to bankroll GAM’s solid waste management project in the capital with the aim of launching a biogas collection and extraction station for electricity generation.
