AMMAN — The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) on Wednesday announced the detection of 18,014 electricity theft cases in the first 11 months of 2018, an official statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Law enforcement and EMRC detected 9,370 cases of the theft, while Public Security and Gendarmerie department personnel added 2,483 cases, said EMRC Chief Commissioner Farouq Hiyari.

The cases detected by EMRC personnel included 6,161 cases, 4,198 with Jordan Electricity Company, 254 cases in areas affiliated with the Irbid District Electricity Company and 1,709 cases in the Electricity Distribution Company, he pointed out.

2,036 electricity violation cases were referred to court, while court verdicts were issued for 1,991 cases, the statement said.

Hiyari stressed that authorities will continue to intensify inspection campaigns, adding that the law stipulates anyone who tampers with the electrical system or is involved in electricity theft faces imprisonment ranging from six months to two years, a fine between JD2,000 and JD10,000, or both.
