AMMAN — The First National Round Table within the Mediterranean Sustainable Energy Investment Forum was held in Amman to discuss ways to invest in sustainable energy in the Mediterranean region.

More than 40 participants from the finance sector, national government, EU Commission in Jordan, European Investment Bank, UN agencies, project developers, renovation supply chain and local and regional energy agencies discussed issues related to financing and investment in the field of improving energy efficiency, according to a Royal Scientific Society statement.

Experts and specialists in the field of energy engaged in a detailed dialogue about the prospects of sustainable energy investment in the Mediterranean with the aim of strengthening regional cooperation in the field of transition towards sustainable energy and improving energy efficiency.

They also discussed topics related to renewable energy in buildings to reach the appropriate mechanisms for financing and investment in the field of energy and to provide solutions for challenges that impede the development of the energy sector within the national framework.

This roundtable was organised by the Royal Scientific Society/National Energy Research Centre within the Mitigation Enabling Energy Transition in the Mediterranean region (meetMED) project; an EU-funded project, developed by the Mediterranean Association of the National Agencies for Energy Management (MEDENER) and the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE).

This National Roundtable in Jordan – MED SEI Forums will kick off a series of five national roundtables organised within the MED SEI Forums, setting up an example to be replicated by other countries, read the statement.

The participants nominated by their institutions and firms will become members of the first National SEI Network to be facilitated by NERC.

Following the success of its first phase (MEETMED I, from 2018-2020), meetMED project commences its second phase aiming to enhance the energy security of beneficiary countries (namely Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia) while fostering their transition to low carbon economy.

Accordingly, meetMED II will be contributing to the creation of more stable, efficient, competitive and climate-resilient socioeconomic contexts in the targeted countries, concluded the statement.

IRENA and RCREEE Strengthen Energy Transition Collaboration in MENA Region – Environment and Development

9/6/2022

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) agreed to strengthen their collaboration on scaling-up renewable energy deployment in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Jordan yesterday, on the margins of the “MENA Europe Future Energy Dialogue,” by IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera and RCREEE Executive Director Dr. Jauad El Kharraz.

Under the agreement, IRENA and RECREEE will partner on regional dialogues and initiatives that address the challenges, needs, and opportunities of a renewables-based energy transition in MENA countries. The agencies will also share knowledge and cooperate on building capacity in MENA countries particularly through enabling policy and regulatory frameworks that can accelerate renewable energy adoption.

The agreement renews an existing MoU signed by the two organisations in 2015. Since then, IRENA and RECREEE have been strategic partners working closely on multiple joint initiatives, most notably on the Pan-Arab Clean Energy Initiative (PACE) which identified a series of actions to increase renewable energy investments in the region. Through the new agreement, the agencies will introduce new areas of cooperation and adapt existing collaborative activities to recent challenges facing the development of renewable energy in the region.
