Ministerial Committee on Legislation approves revision to existing regulations.

Penalties have been sharply increased for the illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste. Offenders will now have their trucks confiscated, pay double the current fine, and serve triple the time in jail.

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation approved on Sunday a revision to the existing regulations. Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) proposed the change.

Up until 2008, 5 million tons of building waste were dumped illegally each year, often in national recreation areas. The revisions to the regulations now allow for confiscation of the violator’s truck. In addition, the fines have been doubled from NIS 202,000 to NIS 404,000 (or NIS 808,000 for a corporation), and jail time can now reach three years, triple the previous one-year term.
