Researchers observed Saturday a group of five dolphins near the Rishon Letzion coastline.

In a survey carried out by members of the Israel Marine Mammal Research & Assistance Center, five dolphins of the species Tursiops truncates, were found swimming 5 kilometers from the Rishon Letzion shore. Among the dolphins, two females are known to the team from previous observations.

Dr. Aviad Scheinin, who led the survey, said that some of the dolphins suffered from a skin condition, which has been observed in the past among dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea.

In recent years several species of dolphins and whales have been repeatedly observed near the Israeli coastline. On several occasions, the dolphins and whales drifted ashore and died after a short while.
