Also on Monday, firefighters battled a wildfire that tore through hundreds of dunams of land near Moshav Lachish in the Shfela lowlands region.

In the Lachish region, including the Eshkol area, wildfires devastated hundreds of dunams near Moshav Amatzya.

Other fires were reported in the Tiberias, Hadera and Even Yehuda areas, among others.

On Sunday, Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Yoram Levy said that, since Saturday, firefighters had responded to over 550 calls, more than five times the typical number for a 24-hour period.

The fires were spurred on not only by the unusually hot weather and high winds, but also because of the Lag Ba’omer holiday on Saturday and Sunday, traditionally celebrated with bonfires.
