Abu Galum Protectorate launched on Monday an environmental diving campaign in Taba.

The campaign — a seabed clean-up at diving spots along the coast at Taba — marked the 27th anniversary of Taba’s return to Egypt after its Israeli occupation.

During the campaign, divers cleared litter and fishing rope from the area’s coral reefs. Growth of reefs is being affected by the dramatic increase in marine litter on the Red Sea.

The campaign was organized by local workers, divers and a team from the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. Major General Sabry al-Waziry, head of Nuweiba city, and Ahmed al-Sadeq, head of the protectorate, attended the launch of the campaign.

Waziry confirmed that the beaches and seabed in Nuweiba and Taba were cleaned. He added that several diving centers, school students and bedouins took part in the campaign, which raised awareness of the protection of natural resources.

150 kilograms of wastes were collected from the seabed, Waziry said. Leaflets were distributed among hotel residents in the area, encouraging visitors to take care of the environment at the unique tourist destination.
