Major General Khaled Abdel Aal, Governor of Cairo, met Sunday with young activists to discuss rooftop cultivation.

Abdel Aal met with representatives from “Sustainable Development Initiatives” and “Realizing 2030 Vision”, established to support the state strategy for sustainable development.

The young representatives discussed with Abdel Aal the initiative to decorate and cultivate roofs of houses in Cairo.

The representatives requested coordination between civil society organizations involved in the planting initiative and Cairo executive authorities.

The also said they would organize awareness campaigns and seminars on the cultivation of rooftops in cities.

Abdel Aal called on the young activists to communicate and coordinate with building residents to facilitate their task, emphasizing that rooftops will be cultivated free of charge for residents.

The role of residents will be limited to preserving the plants after cultivation, he added.

Cairo executive authorities will coordinate with the Agriculture Ministry to select plants suitable for rooftop cultivation, he added.

Abdel Aal said he supports this initiative as part of the plan for sustainable development and believes in the need to expand the green area.

The young activists said they would provide seedlings, shrubs and crops suitable for the cultivation of roofs as well as the vehicles and equipment for the transfer of plants, in cooperation with civil society organizations.

Specialists will organize the plants on rooftops at cultivation time and volunteers will coordinate between the residents of buildings, they added.
