Egypt’s natural gas supplies to East Mediterranean Gas and its clients in Israel are expected to resume by March 4, Ampal-American Israel Corporation said on Sunday, in contrast to media speculation that the pipeline might remain closed on a permanent basis.

Ampal, a listed company that owns a 12.5 percent interest in East Mediterranean Gas, the Egyptian company supplying the gas to Israel, said repair works on the pipeline continue.

The Egyptian National Gas Company, the government-owned firm that owns the pipeline, said last week that it is still repairing the pipeline, which had been damaged in an explosion on February 5.

The repair work and resumption of gas supplies was previously expected around February 17.

Egyptian state television and local government officials had reported saboteurs blew up a pipeline that runs through the north part of the Sinai desert, after Islamists called on militants to exploit the unrest that led to the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak.

The blast disrupted flows to Jordan and also to Israel, where the biggest customer is the Israel Electric Corporation. The utility, and other clients of EMG in Israel, have diverted their gas procurement to the Tethys Sea group for the time being.
