The National Infrastructures Ministry will soon begin selling discounted energy-saving light bulbs to the public as part of a broader effort to promote energy efficiency in both the home and in public institutions, the ministry announced in a statement on Monday.

When the bulbs go on sale, they will be available in a package of three for NIS 20 at a still to-be-determined location, depending on what company wins the government bid to distribute them, a spokeswoman from the ministry told The Jerusalem Post. The ministry estimates that with the increased use of fluorescent, energy-saving light bulbs that will follow, the country will see a savings of about 30 percent in electricity consumption for lighting and of 2 billion kilowatt hours of energy by the year 2020.

In addition to soon making the discounted bulbs available for sale, the National Infrastructures Ministry is also preparing new regulations for public review, which will join other rules set forth last May that banned imports of incandescent and halogen bulbs that exceed 60 watts unless they met certain restrictions, the statement from the ministry said. The new regulations, which will guarantee the public access to more economical bulbs, will be submitted for approval to the Knesset Finance Committee after the public review period, and are expected to take effect during the first quarter of 2012, the ministry said.
