BEIRUT: The Environment Ministry is to establish a National Council for the Environment to carry out research on the environmental impact of construction projects and provide an environmental certification system for businesses.

The projects were announced Monday by Environment Minister Nazem al-Khoury under a series of decrees to coincide with the United Nations Rio+20 conference on sustainable development in Brazil in June.

The ministry said it would also renew its website.

The council will bring together representatives of public and private sectors.
