BEIRUT: The Parliament’s Justice and Administration Committee Monday approved the establishment of a new geology faculty at the Lebanese University.
Committee head MP Robert Ghanem said the proposal, made by MP Nawwaf Moussawi, had been approved, allowing the Lebanese University to inaugurate a new faculty specialized in the geological sciences.
The intended purpose of the faculty is to produce new skilled workers for Lebanon’s offshore oil and gas sector, which is still in its preparatory exploration phase.
Moussawi said the new area of study would “provide new jobs for Lebanese [in the oil and gas sector], after they receive university-level instruction and qualification.”
Following the meeting Ghanem also spoke about the status of a draft law to form a commission to ensure education equality across Lebanon and “raise the level of performance in education, scientific research and that of the teaching staff.”
