AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) will next year finish lighting the city’s streets with LED units, making it “the first capital in the world to switch to this technology”, Mohammad Rahahleh, the director of GAM’s traffic operations department, said on Monday.

More than 150,000 LED units will be installed under the scheme, as part of Amman’s sustainable development to become an environment-friendly city, Rahahleh told the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The project will contribute to reducing carbon emissions from traditional lighting units and will reduce the municipality’s power bill by around 50 per cent, he added.

Rahahleh noted that the project is part of government plans, implemented by the public works and energy ministries, to install LED units on the Kingdom’s inter-governorate roads.

Phases of the project will be carried out with the support and cooperation of international organisations and investors, with individual tenders floated for several streets and areas in the capital, the official said, noting that GAM will recoup the costs in savings made through the project.

Main streets in the capital that have already received LED units include the King Abdullah I Street in Marka, Suleiman Nabulsi Street in Abdali, part of Zahran Street and Hijaz and Shaab streets, as well as Queen Noor and Queen Alia streets.
