We welcomed the news of a ceasefire and hostage agreement with relief and renewed hope that this will bring an end to the suffering on both sides. The profound pain caused by the ongoing captivity of hostages, the loss of lives and homes in Gaza and Israel, and the widespread trauma and pain, underscores the urgent need for this agreement to hold.

At the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, we see this moment as an opportunity to demonstrate that our region can chose a different path.

Through environmental diplomacy and applied research, we stand ready to contribute to preventing future tragedies and building a more resilient future.

Looking ahead, we hope to see the safe return of all hostages and continued efforts to sustainably rebuild the Gaza Envelope area in Israel. We call for urgent attention to the enormous humanitarian crisis of the people of Gaza, which will require a massive effort to rebuild homes and infrastructure.

The Arava Institute is poised to participate in this international effort with rapid decentralized responses to water, energy, and sanitation challenges as the international community gears up for the long-term reconstruction of Gaza.

Our fates are connected. The only path forward is one built on a courageous commitment to a secure, just, and peaceful resolution of this conflict for both Israelis and Palestinians.

At the Arava Institute, we believe that a different future is possible – one rooted in trust, justice, empathy, and compassion. This vision is both achievable and necessary for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to creating this future, and will continue our work to foster understanding, cooperation, and lasting peace in our region.
