AMMAN — Representing HRH Prince El Hassan Bin Talal, Chairman of the University of Jordan’s Board of Trustees Adnan Badran on Monday inaugurated the International Conference on Climate Change and Health in the Arab Region: Advancing Regional Interdisciplinary Collaborations (CCHAR) in Amman.

The four-day event brings together regional and international experts to address the intersection of climate change and public health, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In his opening remarks, Badran described climate change as an “unprecedented existential challenge” requiring urgent, collective international action.

Badran warned that years of ignoring scientific warnings have led to devastating consequences, including floods and severe water scarcity across many countries. He stressed that environmental pollution transcends borders, endangering air and water quality and threatening global public health.

He called for imposing fair taxes on high-polluting countries and corporations, while advocating for increased support to developing nations to build their environmental resilience.

“If the current path continues,” he cautioned, “coastal areas risk submersion, putting over half of the world’s population, who live in coastal regions, at risk.”

Badran also warned of the potential loss of up to 50 per cent of the planet’s biodiversity, including critical genetic resources developed over millions of years.

Such a loss, he said, poses a direct threat to global food security, agriculture, and health systems. He noted that the Middle East is particularly vulnerable, with projections indicating a significant temperature rise and a potential 20 per cent drop in rainfall.

Chair of the conference’s scientific committee Fayez Abdulla said the conference focuses on five core themes: energy, water, food, environment, and health.

Organized by the Hashemite University, the University of Jordan, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Climate Action Network and the Royal Scientific Society, the event features contributions from Arab and international experts in health, climate science, and food security.

Climate Conference:”Climate Change and Health in the Arab Region: Advancing Regional Interdisciplinary Collaborations”

The upcoming conference “Climate Change and Health in the Arab Region: Advancing Regional Interdisciplinary Collaborations” is a significant event co-hosted by two prominent NIH-funded centers: the GeoHealth Hub on Climate Change and Health in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and the Global Center for Climate, Water, Energy, and Food Nexus (GC3WEFH). This international event is scheduled to take place on July 7–8, 2025 in Amman Jordan, and will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and virtual participation.

The conference is designed to address critical issues at the intersection of climate change and health, with a specific focus on the Arab region. It aims to foster regional interdisciplinary collaborations, enabling researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to explore and implement innovative solutions for climate adaptation and health challenges. With funding support from NIH and other global partners, the event is poised to be a platform for knowledge exchange, policy development, and capacity building.

ICE-MENA Conference

The 10th International Conference on Ethics in the Middle East and North Africa Region.

Under the theme of  Climate, environmental justice, and health equity will take place on July 6th 2025 in collaboration with the 1st Climate Change and Health Conference in the Arab Region that will take place on July 7-8th 2025. Both conferences will be sharing the same registration and venue of the conference at the Intercontinental Amman Hotel.

The International Conference on Ethics in the Middle East and North Africa  has been ongoing for 10 years with support from the Research Ethics Education Program in Jordan that is funded by the US National Institute for Health Fogarty International Center. The past conferences covered controversial ethical challenges in research and practice that were led by international leaders in the fields of ethics, science, and health (see the link for the past conferences and the areas of focus) .

This 10th conference will be focused on an important topic that is rarely addressed in the Arab region, which is environmental justice and health equity as an ethical challenge in research. It aligns with the larger conference being held right after it that is focused on climate change and health in the Arab region.

Abstracts are invited from the scientists and practitioners to address health equity and environmental justice and what it is an ethical challenge but also an obligation towards these vulnerable communities. Topics ranging from air pollution, to water scarcity, soil pollution and waste management, inadequate health policies, political obstacles in research, retaliation against environmental researchers, limited training capacity in environmental ethics, and many other topics are considered a priority for this conference. Other general topics of bioethics are also welcome. We will have poster sessions as well as oral presentations and panels.

Please register with the same registration link for the Climate conference and choose ethics conference if you want your abstract to be considered for this conference.

We look forward to seeing you in Amman in July 2025.
