BEIRUT: Parliament’s Environment Committee reiterated Monday demands to close the Naameh landfill, citing its negative effects in and around Beirut.
The committee, chaired by MP Akram Shehayeb, held a meeting in Parliament to discuss the issue, with the attendance of mayors from the areas surrounding the landfill and other officials.
The Naameh landfill project was launched in 1997 after the closure of a dump site at the Normandy seafront in Beirut two years earlier. The new landfill was set to operate for only six years.
However, that date has passed, and the landfill still stands.
“The Naameh landfill is posing grave environmental concerns in the areas it surrounds,” Shehayeb said.
“But the most damage will be done in the capital and Mount Lebanon.
The committee demands its [the landfill] closure when the contract between the Sukleen company and the Development and Reconstruction Council end in January 2015.”
