A forest fire broke out Sunday afternoon in the Arazim Valley near Jerusalem and near Mevaseret Zion.

Israel Fire and Rescue Authority firefighters were dispatched to the scene near Highway 1, which may be closed later by police. Firefighters were also dispatched alongside police forces near Mevaseret. Magen David Adomforces also arrived at the scene.

Eight firefighting aircraft were dispatched to help put out the fire, according to Israeli media.

Evacuations from areas near Mevaseret

Police began evacuating two streets (named Shikma and Shoshana, respectively) close to the fire line near Mevaseret as firefighters are controlling the flames.

Police also evacuated residents from the first line of houses near the fire in Mevaseret Zion, N12 reported.

Later on Sunday, the Fire and Rescue Authority said that firefighters have gained control over the flames, with forces still deployed across the region in an attempt to contain the blaze.

No casualties have been reported.
